Spending his whole life at the foot of famous mountains of Kalasubai, he remained familiar with the natural surroundings of Sahyadri, knows the language of Nature very well. A genuine artist born in the tribal region, now struggling for living at the ripe old- age of 80 today. His name is Thakaji Kushaba Gangad, popularly known as Thakababa.. He spent most of his days in entertaining others, from little kids to the Prime Minister of India. In spite of dedicating his life in entertaining others, today Thakababa is struggling for his daily bread. Thakababa was born on 1932 in the remote village of Udadavane (Akole) at the Western tribal region of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Udadavane is just 10 kms. away from famous Wilson (Bhandardara) Dam. Thakababa possesses two acre ancestral land, but it remained uncultivated due to lack of water. His family consists of seven members and the family has no source and means of income. Thakababa is famous for his artistic attainment. Producing the sounds of different birds and animals, sounds of wind and waterfalls, sound of little baby, he has been entertaining innumerable tourists coming to Kalasubai and Bhandardara every year. Thakababa obtained this art while grazing his cattles in the valleys of Kalasubai as he was quite familiar with the sounds of birds and animals. In the year 1965, the local group of tribal artists had participated in a cultural programme, on the occasion of Republic Day in New Delhi and Thakababa was in that group. The then Prime Minister Lal Bahaddur Shastri and Indira Gandhi bestowed Gold Medal to the team of Maharashtra. Due to old age Thakababa is tired now and obviously it affected his art. His family needs a help. Let’s rehabilitate the family by providing a helping hand!!!! (If you wish to help Thakababa and his family, email to-kale.shantaramlaxman@rediffmail.com
